First off a warning. Even though this game just released on steam (Dec 2014) It was originally released in 2005 so it is a decade old game. I did not realize it at first so good on them to trick me like that. The graphics hold up well and if I were judging this in 2005 I would say it has pretty good graphics.The gameplay resembles any modern day shooter ie the handling and control layout are almost identical show the lack of innovation over the years. I did not have to look up any keys, they all came naturally except to aim down the sights which is the middle mouse button and can not be remapped. There are parts of this game that I am really enjoying. The first part deals with the name of the game, Bet on Soldier. At the beginning of a level you can pick a few named bad guys and wager cash on whether or not you will kill them in a 1 on 1 match. Stronger baddies award more money of course. The plays out like an early nemesis system in Middle Earth. When you come across a named guy it zooms in , there is some chatter between the two of you and then you fight. None of your followers or other bad guys on the map at the time can join it so its mano y mano. You win you get the cash, you lose you start from your last save point. There is a time limit on the match and if you run out of time you lose. This separated the game from other shooters and is a big reason that I am going to recommend this game.The second part I am enjoying is the story. It is very indepth and pretty good too. Some of the old style cut scenes are painfully long due to slow moving people but it does not take away from the story you are being told. The creators did a good job with it.Lastly this game is hard on the higher difficulty settings. On easy you will probably die a few times but mostly you can run and gun. On hard you really need to put thought into your loadout, companions and in game strategy or you will be respawning oftenIf you are looking for a cheap FPS to occupy your time I would definitely suggest this one. THe levels are long and really challenging on higher difficulties. Even though I have yet to beat it I have put 3 hours into it and think it is a game that will last well over 8 hours putting it at that dollar an hour range I like for budget games.If you found my review helpful let me know by clicking yes at the bottom. Graphics may not be too appealing at first glance, but this can be forgiven - after all this game is over ten years old and I would dare to say it aged quite well. Story is flat and we all know it from American action movies - ex soldier, loses family, needs to have his revenge. Does it sound familiar? However, this also can be forgiven. Mechanics are often choppy, this can be forgiven too. However, I stopped playing after nearly 3 hours of gameplay for one single reason - this game is boring as hell. When I hear words such as: FPS, revenge, shooting, I expect action, thrill and dynamic gameplay. This game does not have any of this. Maps are too long, AI of both enemies and allies is predictable and often lacks the "intelligence" part. After two missions I already felt tired. It's not a good sign when game makes you feel like if you are running a full time job playing it. A job you hate and no one pays you for.. Clearly not the best FPS ever, but it was fun.. There's a lot to like, the cheesy setting makes no sense but is just the perfect setting for a video game. The economy based warfare changes how you approach battles, every shot you fire and take costs you money so you have to think about the long game. the BOS fights are a cool concept, but unfortunately they don't work with the movement and shooting this game has. Missions start to get incredibly frustrating and the BOS fights even more so with horrible 'confusion' effects and blindness or invincibility shields that prolong the fights for too long... fights that you fail if you don't finish in 60 seconds.I loved this game until I didn't, then I hated it.. I only ever played the demo for this, when I was like 13. I thought it was cool at the time but I dont think Steam existed back then, and you had to buy games retail, never could find itWas ok for about an hour of 2005 nostalgia, but the game's pretty baaaaaadSound design is the most annoying, its not even sound design its more like sound asset ripping. Noises that sound like radio crackling when you walk... all the guns sound the same... I put the game down when Heard computers making generic cash till sounds. I must say I really like the game, but that's just me. In my opinion this is a very good old school shooter, with a decent story. Although not too hard even with the highest difficulty. The ''boss'' battles are fun, but are they hard? That depends on who ''boss'' you choose to fight. You can also buy a mercenary to help you out, but imo they kind of suck. I just usually leave them safe and go fight the enemies myself. I havent tried the multiplayer, but since the game's kind of old, I'm not sure there's anyone to play. Right now I'm doing a playthrough for the game in youtube.If I have to rate this, I'd give it 8/10
